What's a CSA, and why would I want one?

Community Supported Agriculture

Here is a true win-win partnership. The idea is to support local farmers by "subscribing" to a farm's produce for the season. The customer gets a variety of the freshest produce, usually delivered within 24 hours of harvest. The farmer gets a financial boost in the spring when expenses are high and income is low, and doesn't have to take out a big loan to cover all those spring expenses.

Customers pay in advance for a variety of in-season produce, which they pick up on a weekly, or sometimes monthly, basis. They also usually get a farm newsletter and, best of all, they know where their food is coming from -- on a first-name basis.

Costs vary according to the farm and what they grow, the season (some farms offer spring, summer, and winter shares), and whether you want a full share or half share (less produce or less frequent delivery; not all farms offer this option).

Tumwater Market customers can arrange to pick up their Community Supported Agriculture – CSA – share at the Market from these vendors:

8 Arms Community Bakery (baked goods)

jen@8armsbakery.com

360-754-6894

Kirsop Farm (produce)
kirsopfarm@zhonka.net
360-352-3590

Left Foot Organics (produce)
360-754-1849

For more information on individual programs, or to buy a CSA share, contact the vendor. If your favorite vendor isn't on this list, ask them! They may deliver elsewhere, or they may be considering starting a CSA and your interest will encourage them to go for it.
